Cone penetration testing (CPT) is a standard test which mainly provides diagrams of the variation of soil strength as a function of depth, during penetration of a standard cone. The type of cone determines the effectiveness of the test and there is a choice between a mechanical cone, an electrical cone (for the parallel measurement of pore pressure) and a piezocone (for the additional determination of subsoil dynamic parameters). Dynamic cone penetration (DCP) is the ground penetration of a standard cone caused by the impact of a weight falling from a predetermined height. The results include the plotting of the number of impacts (for a certain penetration depth) as a function of depth. No soil sample shall be taken. The above tests provide detailed information on soil stratigraphy, allowing preliminary assessments of geotechnical properties and liquefaction risk assessments.
